At the end of the day, it’s all based on circumstance and adaptation. There’s no “right” way to win, but there are more effective routes to victory than others.
If you get spawned in a hilly area, that benefit is going to be pretty much non-existent. To get this benefit, though, you’ll need to be near firsts or jungle. After inventing the wheel, Hiawatha can move through forest and jungle in friendly terrain without expending extra movement, even if there’s no road. An example of this would be Hiawatha and the Iroquois. Your spawn point can heavily influence how well you can play, especially if your civilization relies on certain terrain features. Trading with the AIs and your friends is also important, and most times will be vital to victory, but you want to make sure that you’re getting as good or better than you’re giving.Ī lot of Civ V comes down to practice, experience, and luck. Unhappiness comes in many forms, but it most often comes, (in my experience,) from having too many cities and not having enough luxury resources. Unhappiness means things take longer to build and that can hamstring you pretty heavily. It’s also important to keep your happiness score in the positive. It gives you access to better units, better buildings to build, and allows you to access more policy trees, which, (depending on your civilization and what victory styles work well with it,) you’ll need.
A good science score is pretty vital to victory, even when not pursuing a scientific victory.
